CHAPTER 19

GOLDEN ONE

“Rhynik … ” My voice echoes off the stone of the stairway again as we climb ever higher along the tower, but this time, it’s softly demanding, plaintive, instead of my shrill demands from before.

“Only a little more, my darling Elora. Come,” he pulls me ever higher, and soon, the ache between my legs is overpowered by something more powerful.

A stitch in my side.

“Gods, why do you have such a fucking large tower?” I pant, letting his strength pull me up the stairs.

He snorts, “I have heard that before.”

I roll my eyes but can’t help but smirk at his innuendo. “Pervert.”

He laughs, his hand briefly tightening on mine as we go higher. I start to count the steps again, groaning, “Rhynik … ” when we reach 333, but thankfully, the end is in sight, a wooden floor appearing above us on the next curve around the central tower.

“Here,” he essentially pulls me up the last few steps, stopping at the barred doorway on the narrow landing. He pulls a key from around his neck, which I hadn’t noticed before, even though my mouth had been mere inches away from the leather chord, and with it, unlocks the bar and swings the door open, leading me into the tower’s room.

It’s not a freestanding tower, one wall resting along the southern block of the fortress, though the tower itself predates any of the rest of the structures. And though the stairwell had been circular, winding around itself in tight spirals, the room at the top is square and larger than the tower’s footprint. Barred windows look out three sides, and the windows along the southern side have been blocked off by shutters where the nearby building clearly abuts.

Light fills the space flooding in from the north, east, and west, the view beyond looking out over the eastern face of the mountain, which falls away into distant forests. A banked fireplace slumbers along the outermost wall, a heavy wooden desk next to it. It’s situated right beneath the eastern row of windows, faced directly so that the morning light will fall across the papers and books strewn across its surface. Books are everywhere, in fact, stacked in haphazard piles on the wooden floor and worn carpets, along the benches beneath the windows, along the mantle … it’s actually quite a clutter.

Rhynik gives me no time to focus on the surroundings, though, swinging the door shut and simultaneously crowding me back against it.

His mouth is against mine before I can draw another breath, his urgency stealing whatever air I had remaining in my lungs. His tongue is wicked, licking along the roof of my mouth, twisting with the tip of my own, his teeth nipping along my lower lip when he pulls back moments later.

“Gods help me, I tried to resist you, Elora. I tried.” He sounds as though he’s begging for forgiveness, and my anger over this past month fades away as though it were nothing but ashes on the wind.

“I
